Many tourists trekking to the Everest region travel from Kathmandu to Ramechaap during the peak trekking season to avoid delays and congestion at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport.

Ramechhap is 142.8 km by road from Kathmandu. It is situated in Manthali Municipality within the Ramechhap District of Bagmati Province. Meanwhile, the Ramechaap airport lies close to the district headquarters and right on the banks of the beautiful Tamakoshi River.

Ramechhap Airport, also known as Manthali Airport, is a lifesaver for trekkers heading to the Everest Region, particularly during the busy trekking seasons from March to April and September to November.

In these busy times, all flights to Lukla are redirected to operate from Ramechhap, which makes things run more smoothly and gets you to the Everest region faster. The flight from Ramechhap is around 15 minutes shorter than from Kathmandu.

Opened in 1979 and upgraded in 2015, Ramechhap Airport is well-equipped to handle the influx of trekkers during peak season.

Located at an elevation of 1,555 feet, this airport has a single runway that's 518 meters long. It does a great job of directing air traffic to Lukla and Phaplu, two important destinations in the Everest region.

This location makes it not only a practical choice for rerouted flights but also an attractive destination in its own right.

Once in Ramechhap, you can enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings and do some fun adventure activities. The Tamakoshi River is famous for its breathtaking views and is a great spot for rafting.

Ramechhap is accessible only by road, with 5 to 7 hours of driving from Kathmandu depending on the chosen mode of transport and road conditions.

The drive, though long, is quite scenic. During the drive, you can enjoy the landscape, including the views of the Tamakoshi River.

There are multiple options to get from Kathmandu to Ramechaap for your EBC Trek, including regular public buses, rental cars, tourist buses, and shared jeeps. Depending on your preferences and budget, you can choose from several transportation options.

Public Bus from Kathmandu to Ramechaap

Public buses to Ramechhap

Public buses are the most budget-friendly way to travel from KTM to RHP. The tickets cost around USD 15. These buses depart from two locations in Kathmandu: Chabahil and the Old Bus Park, starting from 6 am onwards.

Your journey starts in Kathmandu. First, you take the six-lane highway to Bhaktapur. After Bhaktapur, the road narrows to two lanes and gradually climbs past several small towns to Dhulikhel hill station.

At Dhulikhel, you switch from the Arniko Highway to the B.P. Koirala Highway. From here, the road becomes narrow and has many sharp turns.

The journey takes about 6 hours by public bus, but it might take a bit longer due to frequent stops to let passengers on and off.

Even though it can be a bit slow, many people still choose to take the bus because it's budget-friendly and gives you a chance to connect with locals.

If you're taking a public bus, it's a good idea to leave early in the morning to avoid the afternoon traffic and get to your destination on time.

Also, you should book your bus tickets ahead of time, especially during busy travel times, to make sure you can get a seat.

Shared Bus

The shared bus option is ideal for solo travelers or small groups looking for an affordable and convenient mode of transport. The cost for a single seat on a shared bus from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Manthali is around $30.

These buses run several times throughout the day, offering you the flexibility to choose a departure time that works best for you. It’s advisable to book your seat in advance, especially during peak travel seasons or festivals.

On a shared bus, the seats are usually pretty comfy, but it can depend on what type of bus you’re riding in, newer or older buses.

Most buses have seats that recline and decent legroom. Also, a lot of buses are air-conditioned, which helps keep things comfortable, especially in the hotter months

The journey from Kathmandu to Ramechhap Manthali typically takes around 5 to 6 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.

Also, shared buses make several stops along the way for refreshments and restroom breaks, where passengers can stretch their legs and grab a snack.

Most shared buses to Ramechhap Manthali depart from the central bus stations in Kathmandu, such as the New Bus Park (Gongabu) or Kalanki Bus Station. It’s advisable to arrive at the departure point at least 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

Tourist Bus

Tourist buses, typically larger than local buses with around 40 seats, offer more legroom and comfort. No wonder, they are a popular choice for tourists.

Some buses are newer models with features like air conditioning and Wi-Fi. However, the availability and reliability of these features can vary.

While cheaper tourist buses provide basic comfort, more expensive ones offer better seating and improved amenities.

The condition of the buses can range from older to newer models, but they are generally well-maintained, making them a safer and more reliable option compared to local buses.

The journey usually takes 5 to 6 hours, much faster than local buses.

Tickets can be booked online, through travel agencies, or at bus stations in Kathmandu, with major departure points including the New Bus Park (Gongabu) and Kalanki Bus Station.

Hiace vans are medium-sized vehicles with 14 seats. The van is comfortable for 12 people, with the ability to accommodate up to 14 people with minimal baggage.

While the van can accommodate up to 14 people, baggage space inside is limited. However, there is a baggage carrier available on the rooftop, also used for additional luggage storage.
