A few important things to know before you book this trek:

  • This itinerary is designed by our expert guides around the shortest genuine path to Poon Hill's sunrise. Day 2's stone steps are demanding by design, not an oversight, since they're what makes a three-day trip possible at all.
  • Sunrise visibility depends on weather we can't control. Your guide will give you an honest read on conditions rather than a guaranteed promise.
  • Travel insurance isn't required for this specific low-altitude trek, but we recommend it for any international trip regardless.
  • Permit fees for the Annapurna Conservation Area are set by the Nepal Tourism Board and can change. The price shown reflects current rates, confirmed again at booking.
Ghorepani Poonhill Trek 3 Days
  • Hosted by Himalayan Locals
  • Meaningful Human Connections
  • Carefully Designed for Altitude & Safety
  • Trusted by Global Travellers

Three days is genuinely enough for one of Nepal's best sunrise views. Trek from Nayapul to Ghorepani, climb Poon Hill before dawn for Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, and Machhapuchhre in one sweep, then descend the same way you came. No detours, no wasted days. Just the sunrise, reached as directly as Nepal allows.

The Poon Hill Trek 3 Days is the quickest way to stand at one of Nepal's best sunrise viewpoints. No extension to Ghandruk. No second night in the hills. Just Nayapul, Ghorepani, and the sunrise, done in a single tight loop.

Why This Trek Skips Ghandruk

Our other two Poon Hill routes both continue to Ghandruk after the sunrise. This one turns around. That single decision is what makes three days possible. You get the same panorama from the same hilltop, without the extra day and a half a Ghandruk detour adds.

Who Actually Books This Poon Hill Trek

Travelers with limited time in Nepal who still want a genuine mountain sunrise, not just a photo from a bus window. It also suits trekkers adding a short hike onto a longer Nepal itinerary that already includes Kathmandu, Chitwan, or a lake stay in Pokhara. If Ghandruk's Gurung culture matters to you as much as the view does, our 4 or 5 day versions are worth the extra time.

The most direct route to Poon Hill we offer. Three days, Nayapul to Ghorepani to the sunrise viewpoint and back, without the Ghandruk extension our longer itineraries include. Run from Pokhara, with Kathmandu transport available as an addon.

Ulleri's Stone Steps: Roughly 3,200 Steps in One Climb

The trek's single physical test, tackled on Day 2 while the group is fresh.

Ghorepani Village: A Genuine Overnight, Not a Waypoint

Julia Everhart
Very nice place and great views

This holiday I didn't want to go anywhere else but just stay at a nice hotel in Pokhara and relax with my husband. But, my husband is a restless guy, he wouldn't just end this trip without doing a trek. I found the best deal after contacting Ram. So we decided to go to Poon Hill, it wasn't our first time in Nepal or even to Poon Hill. But, it surprises you every time. It was our middle ground, I wanted a laid back holiday, he couldn't stay and relax at a place. So, in short, it was yet another fun time with Sublime Trails.

A
Views to make you really happy

I''m not a kind of person who can walk a lot. But, Im proud to say that I completed my 3 days Poonhill trek. It wasn't easy for someone like me, If someone takes an hour to walk a distance I will take 3 hours for me to walk the same. Our guide was absolutely humble, caring and encouraging so he took care of us. When we reached Poon Hill, I forgot everything for few minutes. It was just brilliant how beautiful the mountains looked from there.

Essential

Know Everything Before You Go Poon Hill Trek 3 Days

Currency & ATMs

Exchange currency in Pokhara before you start trekking, since this is where your itinerary begins. ATMs are available in Pokhara but not beyond Nayapul, so carry sufficient cash for the full trek. Budget roughly US$90 to 120 in cash for personal spending on this direct route.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not legally required to enter Nepal or obtain a visa. It is required by us before you can start this trek, the same as every itinerary we run. This applies even on our shortest and most direct route.

Your policy should cover emergency medical treatment and evacuation, though the high altitude threshold matters less here than on our Everest or Manaslu products. This trek never crosses 3,210m. Confirm your policy covers trekking up to 3,500m as a baseline, which most standard policies already include.

Buy your policy before you leave home regardless. Day 3's long combined sunrise and descent day is the physical risk factor most worth insuring against here.

Nepal Visa

Most nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens, can get a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. You can also apply online in advance to save time at immigration. A 15 day visa comfortably covers this short itinerary with plenty of room to spare. Indian citizens don't need a visa at all. Bring a valid passport, one passport photo, and the visa fee.

Travel Etiquette

  • Always pass mani walls, chortens, and prayer wheels on your left, walking clockwise. This is a real Buddhist observance, not a suggestion.
  • Ask before photographing people directly. A smile and a gesture toward your camera is usually enough. A shaken head means no, and that's the end of it.
  • Yield the trail to porters and mule trains. Stay on the uphill side when you do, particularly on Day 3's long descent.
  • A donation at any shrine along the route is appreciated but never expected. Don't make a show of it either way.
  • Even on this fastest itinerary, take a moment to greet teahouse owners properly rather than rushing past. A quick Namaste matters regardless of your pace.
  • Tipping is customary, not mandatory, and matters more than it might seem. Guides and porters rely on it as real income. Ask your operator for a typical range rather than guessing.

Training for the Poon Hill Trek 3 Days

This is the fastest trek in our lineup, and Day 2's roughly 3,200 stone steps deserve real respect despite the short overall length. Start training at least 4 to 6 weeks out.

  • Cardio, 2 to 3 times a week, building toward 60 minute sessions. Day 3 combines the sunrise climb with a long descent all the way back to Nayapul, a genuinely full day.
  • Load-bearing hikes with a daypack at 5kg, at least once weekly before you travel. The stone steps on Day 2 demand real leg strength regardless of your overall fitness level.
  • This trek suits travelers genuinely short on time who still want a proper mountain sunrise. Prior trekking experience is not required, though basic fitness makes the experience more enjoyable.
  • Fitness doesn't prevent altitude sickness, though this trek's low altitude ceiling means the real risk here is physical fatigue, not AMS. Train for the steps and the long final day specifically.

Porter and Weight Limitation

One porter carries up to 10kg shared between two trekkers on this route. This is the lightest allowance in our entire lineup, given this trek's short length. Keep your personal duffel to around 5 to 6kg for comfortable sharing. Given Day 3's long combined day, pack as light as this itinerary genuinely allows.

Electricity & Connectivity

Electricity and charging are available at Tikhedhunga and Ghorepani, both offering reliable connectivity. Most lodges charge a small per device fee. Mobile data through NTC or Ncell works reliably throughout this entire short itinerary.

Getting to Pokhara and the Nayapul Transfer

This trek starts and ends in Pokhara, not Kathmandu. It uses standard road transport throughout, with no domestic flight involved at any point.

Getting to Pokhara itself is a separate step. Most travelers arrive from Kathmandu by road, roughly 6 to 7 hours. A 25 minute domestic flight is available as an addon.

This is our most schedule flexible itinerary, given its short length and minimal weather sensitivity. It suits last minute additions to a longer Nepal trip better than any other trek we run.
