If you're looking for more than just reaching Everest Base Camp, this journey offers the perfect mix of mountain adventure, Sherpa heritage, and one of Nepal's most celebrated Buddhist festivals.

The Everest Mani Rimdu Festival Trek is a balanced trekking trip in the Khumbu region with adventurous trekking and cultural exploration. It introduces you to Sherpa ceremonies, a euphoric atmosphere, and traditional rituals while enjoying the scenic beauty of the Himalayas. With the picturesque mountains at the backdrop and serene atmosphere, the trek provides a sense of joy to trekkers. It adds a spiritual dimension to the trek and gives the visitors a chance to sneak peek into Nepalese culture and tradition.

Celebrated in the Fall, Mani Rimdu is one of the major festivals of Buddhists. It’s observed every year to mark Buddhism's founding and beckon peace in the Sherpa community. Ritual acts are performed at three of the monasteries in the region including at the Tengboche Monastery, where Lamas and Sherpas gathered around in fascinating masks and costumes.

Orchestrated shows are put up with grand feasts, symbolizing the culture and creating a festive mood. It also puts up a beautiful display of Buddhist culture, all while you’re cherishing the surrounding mountain view with diverse landscapes.

Starting with a scenic flight to Lukla, the trek unrolls with a steep but quick walk to Phakding. Meantime, the trek to Namche takes up to 6 hours through Sagarmatha National Park. During the trek, you’ll encounter several Buddhist monasteries and mani walls.

The next day, you’ll start on a journey to Tengboche and stay there for another three days, attending the festival. The event's highlight is Cham and Jinsak, where visitors observe mask dance and fire puja. On the next stop to Dingboche, you’ll encounter a 16th-century Pangboche Monastery, a major learning hub for Buddhists. Don’t miss the iconic stone walls surrounding potato, buckwheat, and barley fields.

Notice the Khumbu glacier while heading to Lobuche as it provides a stunning view. The scenic journey is filled with views of Pumori, Lingtren, and Khumbutse. The following day, you’ll trek Everest Base Camp, passing Gorak Shep and admiring the incredible view.

So if you’re also willing to join us on this adventure and experience the unique culture, pack your bags and book your trip to Nepal..

When will the Mani Rimdu Festival be celebrated in 2026?

As stated earlier, the Mani Rimdu Festival is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in Tengboche. The 19-day festival is observed from the first day of the tenth month of the Tibetan Lunar Calendar, falling in Autumn.

The 2026 Mani Rimdu Festival will be celebrated on the 26th, 27th, and 18th of October.

And much like every other year, this year too the Sherpas will perform puja to enshrine the Mandala. There will be celebrations in the village, fires will be lit, and rituals will be performed.

Journey Highlights

Cultural show of sherpa at Mani Rimdu Festival
Mani Rimdu Festival (Tengboche): Buddhism's Legendary Victory, Re-enacted Live

Monks in painted masks and brocade costumes perform ritual dances re-enacting Guru Rimpoche's triumph over the Bon religion, watched by the entire Sherpa community.

The Sand Mandala: Days of Work, Destroyed Within Hours

An intricate mandala built from colored sand over several days by monastery monks, ritually dismantled as part of the festival's teaching on impermanence.

Everest Base Camp (5,364m): The Same Destination, A Different Trip

Reached via the identical classic route, now paired with two days of festival immersion most Everest trekkers never experience.

Kala Patthar (5,545m): View of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse

The trip's highest point and clearest panoramic view of Everest, reached the same way as our standard itinerary.

Fixed Dates, Not Flexible

  • This trek only runs on dates timed to the festival. It cannot be booked for an arbitrary start date the way our other Everest treks can.

Namche Fills Up Fast

  • Accommodation along the route books out early during festival week. We recommend confirming your spot well ahead of the season.

A Living Ceremony, Not a Show

  • Mani Rimdu is a genuine religious event. Respectful, quiet observation is expected throughout.

The Same Physical Demands as Our Classic Trek

  • Adding the festival doesn't reduce the altitude or distance of the underlying Everest Base Camp route.

The Mani Rimdu Festival takes place only once each year, making this trek available during limited autumn departures. Booking early is recommended, as accommodation around Tengboche fills quickly during the festival.

Safety and Altitude

Designed for Success at Altitude

Confidence. Not Fear.

Although the Mani Rimdu Festival is the highlight of this journey, the trek still reaches Everest Base Camp (5,364 m) and Kala Patthar (5,545 m). Our itinerary is designed with gradual altitude gain and proper acclimatization to help you trek safely and confidently.

Built-in Acclimatization – Rest days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche support safe altitude adaptation.

Experienced Trek Leaders – Licensed local guides trained in altitude illness prevention and first aid.

Health Monitoring – Daily health checks help identify altitude-related symptoms early.

Emergency Support – Helicopter evacuation assistance is available through your travel insurance if required.

Helicopter Evacuation

Emergency helicopter rescue is available throughout most of the Everest region and is coordinated through your travel insurance provider.

The Everest Mani Rimdu Festival Trek begins with the scenic flight to Lukla (2,860 m), offering clear views of deep valleys and snow-capped peaks. Once on the ground, we lace up our boots for a very forgiving, mostly downhill walk through the stone farmlands of Chaurikharka village. You’ll cross your first high suspension bridge draped in colorful prayer flags before finishing the afternoon by the turquoise roar of the Dudh Koshi River in Phakding (2,610 m).

Day 4 - Phakding to Namche Bazaar

We follow the turquoise river valley through pine forests to Monjo to register our national park permits before tackling the day's real challenge. After crossing the high, iconic Hillary Suspension Bridge, the trail transitions into a demanding, two-hour uphill climb to the Sherpa capital. Our guides will maintain a slow, steady pace to assist your breathing, pausing at a forest viewpoint to catch a glimpse of Mount Everest before we arrive at the spectacular, crescent-shaped town of Namche Bazaar.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: ~11.3 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 5 - Acclimatization Hike to Hotel Everest View

To ensure your safety and minimize the risk of altitude sickness, we spend a mandatory rest day following the climb high, sleep low rule. We will take an acclimatization hike up to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 meters, where you can sip hot ginger tea while marveling at a stunning panorama of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. For travelers seeking a gentler day, a walk to the nearby Sagarmatha National Park Museum offers incredible vistas and rich insights into local Sherpa culture without intense physical strain.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)
Duration: 3-4 hours
Distance: ~4.5 km (2.8 miles round-trip)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 6 - Namche Bazaar to Tengboche

The walk out of Namche is pure alpine magic, offering a sweeping, unobstructed skyline of Everest and the razor-sharp peak of Ama Dablam. At the same time, wild Himalayan goats graze on the cliffsides. After a long descent down to the river for a hot lunch at Phungi Thenga, we face a steady two-hour uphill climb through deep, mossy rhododendron woods. You'll emerge onto a high ridge where the air smells intensely of burning juniper incense, right at the footsteps of the historic Tengboche Monastery (founded in 1916).

Max Altitude: 3,867m (12,687ft)
Duration: 5-6 hours
Distance: ~9.2 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 7 - Mani Rimdu Festival at Tengboche Monastery

Today, the high-altitude wilderness transforms into a vibrant cultural hub as Sherpa families gather at the monastery in their finest traditional attire for the Wong Ceremony. This official opening day features the High Rinpoche bestowing public blessings amid the low boom of Tibetan horns and clashing cymbals. With the Sublime Trails team guiding you through the local customs, you will join the gathering to receive blessed Mani Rilbu (herbal pills) and Tshereel (long-life pills), offering travelers a deeply personal connection to living Buddhist traditions.

Max Altitude: 3,867m (12,687ft)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 8 - Second Day at Festival (Cham Dance)

Your guide will lead you to the monastery courtyard early to secure a great seat for the festival's visual centerpiece: the sacred Cham Dances. You’ll watch monks in heavy silk robes and expressive masks perform hypnotic movements depicting the triumph of good over evil forces. It is a stunning, family-friendly spectacle that beautifully balances solemn spiritual reverence with theatrical storytelling and lighthearted community laughter.

Max Altitude: 3,867m (12,687ft)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 9 - The Closing Jinsak (Fire Puja Ritual)

The festival reaches its structural climax today with the Jinsak, a powerful fire puja ritual where symbolic offerings are placed into a sacred hearth to cleanse the valley of obstacles and negative energy. Afterward, the monks deliberately dismantle the intricate Sand Mandala they meticulously created over weeks of meditation, offering the sand to the local stream spirits. It is a beautiful, moving lesson in the core Buddhist philosophy of impermanence that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who witnesses it.

Max Altitude: 3,867m (12,687ft)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 10 - Tengboche to Dingboche (Deeper Into the High Alpine)

Leaving the festival behind, we cross the Imja Khola and trek past the ancient stone walls of Pangboche village into the treeless alpine zone. Because the thinning air requires a slower, measured pace, our team will guide you steadily into the valley of Dingboche. Your guide will remind everyone to layer up early, ensuring a comfortable arrival at our tea house before the sharp evening chill sets in.

Max Altitude: 4,410m (14,468ft)
Duration: 5-6 hours
Distance: ~10.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 11 - Rest and Explore in Dingboche

Above 4,000 meters, taking it slow is a vital requirement to keep altitude sickness at bay. Hence, your guide will lead a steady morning hike up Nangkartshang Ridge for a jaw-dropping view of Lhotse's massive South Face, though anyone wishing to rest their knees can opt for a gentle walk on the flat valley floor. You can spend the afternoon resting, staying hydrated, and playing card games in the heated dining hall of our tea house.

Max Altitude: 4,410m (14,468ft)
Duration: 3-4 hours
Distance: ~5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 12 - Along the Khumbu Moraine to Lobuche

Our path climbs gently along the glacial valley floor before pausing for a warm bowl of soup at Thugla, the launch point for the infamous Thugla Pass hill. At the top of this steep ridge, we walk quietly through the moving Everest Climbers' Memorial, where stone monuments honor the legendary Sherpas and international climbers who lost their lives on the peaks. From this reflective high point, a gentle one-hour walk along the moraine of the Khumbu Glacier brings us into the settlement of Lobuche.

Max Altitude: 4,940m (16,207ft)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Distance: ~7.9 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 13 - Trek to Gorak Shep and Hike to Everest Base Camp

This milestone day begins with an early trek over loose moraine and rocky scree to reach Gorak Shep (5,164 m), our highest overnight stop. After dropping our heavy bags and enjoying a quick lunch, we push forward on a rollercoaster trail along the glacier's edge to Everest Base Camp (5,364 m). Standing at the edge of this legendary destination, wrapped in prayer flags and looking directly at the tumbling ice towers of the Khumbu Icefall, brings an unforgettable sense of achievement before we retrace our steps back to Gorak Shep.

Max Altitude: 5,164m (16,942ft)
Duration: 6-7 hours
Distance: ~12 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 14 - Hike to Kala Patthar and Trek Down to Pheriche

We wake up before dawn in the freezing darkness to tackle the steep switchbacks of Kala Patthar (5,545 m), the highest point of our journey. While you can't actually see the true summit of Everest from Base Camp, the top of Kala Patthar rewards your hard work with a completely unobstructed, golden sunrise view over the world's highest peak. It is an emotional, unforgettable milestone for trekkers, after which we descend to Gorak Shep for breakfast and make a long, oxygen-rich downhill cruise to the warmer valley of Pheriche (4,240 m).

Max Altitude: 4,240m (13,910ft)
Duration: 7-8 hours
Distance: ~15.3 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 15 - Trek to Namche

Our descent is smooth and rapid as we follow the trail back down past Pangboche and drop into the comforting warmth of the rhododendron and pine forests. Arriving back in Namche Bazaar feels like a return to modern comforts after days in the alpine zone. You can enjoy a long, hot shower, reward yourself with a fresh slice of apple pie at a local bakery, or use the available Wi-Fi to share your festival and base camp photos with loved ones.

Max Altitude: 3,440m (11,286ft)
Duration: 5-6 hours
Distance: ~14.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 16 - Retracing Our Steps to Lukla

Our final day on the trail brings us full circle as we make the long descent down the Namche hill, cross our final high suspension bridges, and stroll through the familiar riverside farmlands of Phakding. A final, ironic hour of uphill walking brings us back to the gateway town of Lukla. In the evening, we gather for a final celebration dinner with our incredible crew of local porters and assistant guides, giving you a wonderful chance to thank the team and share your favorite stories from the trek.

Max Altitude: 2,860m (9,383ft)
Duration: 7-8 hours
Distance: ~13.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Tea House

Day 17 - Fly to Kathmandu and Farewell Dinner

We board an early morning flight from Lukla back to Kathmandu, where a representative will transfer you back to your hotel. The rest of the afternoon is yours to enjoy at leisure, whether you want to shop for pashminas in Thamel, purchase handmade souvenirs, or relax at a garden cafe. In the evening, the Sublime Trails team will gather with you for a special farewell dinner to toast your incredible achievements across the high passes of the Khumbu.

Max Altitude: 1,400m (4,593ft)
Duration: 35-minute flight
Meals: Breakfast & Farewell Dinner
Accommodation Type: 3-Star Hotel

Day 18 - Departure

After a final breakfast at your hotel, our driver will pick you up and drop you off at the international airport for your flight back home. 3rd Trek with Sublime Trails

It was great meeting old friends in Kathmandu- Ram and Suman- and new friends on the trek -Ajit, Bibek, Laxman. Ajit is clearly a very experienced guide, and I felt our group of 7 was safe in his hands. We had members as young as 25 and mature as 65, with varying levels of fitness. 2 of us, yours truly included, being more susceptible to AMS symptoms than the rest, and needed a lot more time to ascend on some of the trek days. Ajit managed it all so well, and we are so grateful to him. Bibek impressed me as our youthful and motivated assistant guide. You could chat with him about mountains, politics, philosophy. Or maybe get him to do a Nepali rap. Just make sure Laxman is nearby, so you can see him dance to it ;) Miss you guys!!

Essential

Know Everything Before You Go Everest Mani Rimdu Festival Trek

Currency & ATMs

Exchange currency in Kathmandu before departure. ATMs exist only in Lukla and Namche Bazaar along the route. Both charge a processing fee of roughly 3 to 8 percent on card withdrawals. Carry the local currency equivalent of at least US$300 in cash for personal spending beyond what this package includes.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not legally required to enter Nepal or obtain a visa. It is required by us before you can start this trek, the same as every itinerary we run.

Your policy needs high-altitude coverage to at least 6,000m and helicopter evacuation coverage, since this itinerary reaches the same altitude as our Classic Everest Base Camp Trek. US-based trekkers commonly use UnitedHealthcare Global. European trekkers use Allianz or Europe Assist. Australian trekkers use Cover-More.

Buy your policy before you leave home. Given this trek runs on fixed annual dates tied to the festival calendar, confirm your policy allows rescheduling if your dates shift, since festival timing is occasionally confirmed only a few months ahead.

Nepal Visa

Most nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens, can get a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. You can also apply online in advance. This trek runs on fixed dates confirmed only a few months ahead. Apply for your visa once your travel dates are locked in, not before. A 20 day visa covers this itinerary exactly. Choose 30 days if you want buffer around the festival dates.

Travel Etiquette

  • Always pass mani walls, chortens, and prayer wheels on your left, walking clockwise. This is a real Buddhist observance, not a suggestion, and it matters especially at Tengboche during festival week.
  • Photography during the Mani Rimdu ceremonies is generally permitted, though flash photography and disruptive movement during active ceremonies are not. Ask your guide before your first ceremony, since specific rules can vary by moment.
  • This is a genuine religious ceremony, not a performance staged for visitors. Quiet, respectful observation is expected throughout, even during the more visually dramatic masked dances.
  • Remove your shoes before entering the monastery prayer hall. Keep your voice low inside, and follow local trekkers' lead if you're unsure where to stand or sit.
  • A donation at Tengboche Monastery is genuinely appreciated during festival week, more so than on a standard visit. Ask your guide for an appropriate amount if you'd like to contribute.
  • Tengboche is busier than usual during the festival. Patience and courtesy toward other visitors matters more here than on our other Everest itineraries.
  • Tipping is customary, not mandatory, and matters more than it might seem. Guides and porters rely on it as real income. Ask your operator for a typical range rather than guessing.

Training for the Everest Mani Rimdu Festival Trek

  • This itinerary follows the same route and altitude profile as our Classic Everest Base Camp Trek. Train for it the same way. The festival days don't reduce the physical demands of the trek around them.
  • Cardio, 3 to 4 times a week, building toward 75 to 90 minute sessions. This is the same standard we recommend for our 14-day classic itinerary.
  • Load-bearing hikes with a daypack at 5 to 8kg, at least once weekly in your final month. This trek covers the same distance and elevation gain as our standard Everest Base Camp route.
  • Don't assume the festival makes this trek easier or more casual. Two full acclimatization days are still built in. The trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar happens on the same demanding schedule as our other classic itineraries.
  • Fitness doesn't prevent altitude sickness. The festival days at Tengboche don't change your body's need for gradual acclimatization on the way to Base Camp.

Porter and Weight Limitation

Baggage allowance on the Lukla flight is capped at 15kg including hand luggage. One porter carries up to 25kg shared between two trekkers, so keep your personal duffel to around 12 to 13kg. This applies for the full trek to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar, the same as our Classic itinerary. The festival days don't change your gear needs.

Electricity & Connectivity

Electricity and phone charging are free up to Namche Bazaar. Beyond Namche, most teahouses charge a per-device fee that increases with altitude, so a power bank is worth carrying. Expect Tengboche's charging facilities to be in higher demand than usual during festival week, given the increased number of visitors.

Lukla Flight Delays and Alternatives

Lukla flight delays are the most common disruption on this trek. They carry extra weight here, given the fixed festival dates this itinerary is built around.

When scheduled flights are delayed by weather, a private helicopter charter is often available as a faster alternative for trekkers willing to pay for it. This typically costs US$400 to $500 per person from Kathmandu to Lukla. We recommend it without hesitation if a delay threatens your Tengboche arrival timing for the festival.

If flights are suspended entirely for an extended period, an overland route exists via Phaplu and Surke. This adds roughly two driving days each way. This trip is built around a fixed festival window, so we treat this route as a genuine last resort. We discuss timing directly with you if it becomes necessary.
