One of the highest lakes on earth, then the same legendary pass every Annapurna Circuit trekker crosses. Fourteen days from Kathmandu: the Marsyangdi valley to Manang, a detour through Khangsar to Tilicho Lake at 4,919m, then back to the main trail for the crossing of Thorong La Pass and the descent into Muktinath. The remoteness of Tilicho and the achievement of the full circuit, in one itinerary.

The Tilicho Lake Trek is a 14-day adventure in Nepal’s Annapurna region that takes you to one of the world’s highest lakes — the beautiful Tilicho Lake.

This trek is known for being both challenging and rewarding. Since the lake lies in a remote part of the Annapurna range, it’s perfect for trekkers who enjoy exploring off-the-beaten-path routes. The Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek offers a mix of adventure, nature, and culture that makes it a memorable journey for any traveler.

One of the biggest highlights of the trek is crossing the famous Thorong La Pass, which also connects to the Annapurna Circuit and Tilicho Lake Trek route. The landscapes change dramatically as you climb higher — from lush forests and green hills to dry, rocky areas that resemble the Tibetan Plateau. When you finally reach Tilicho Lake, its calm, turquoise water surrounded by snow-capped peaks feels truly magical.

Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages where people from different ethnic groups live. Their warm hospitality and unique traditions make the trek even more special. You’ll also enjoy clear views of some of Nepal’s tallest peaks, including Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Nilgiri, and Himchuli.

Tilicho Lake holds great religious importance, too. Many Hindus visit it to take a holy bath, believing it purifies the soul. During the trek, you’ll also visit the sacred Muktinath Temple, an important site for both Hindus and Buddhists. The area is dotted with colorful monasteries and ancient gompas that reflect the region’s spiritual side.

The trail starts from Kathmandu and follows the famous Annapurna route to Chame. From there, you’ll trek to Manang — a beautiful mountain village known for its peaceful atmosphere. After resting and getting used to the altitude, the trail continues to Tilicho Base Camp. The path becomes narrower here, but the views get even more stunning.

After exploring Tilicho Lake, you’ll rejoin the main trail to cross Thorong La Pass (5,416 m). The journey then continues to Muktinath and Kagbeni before ending in Jomsom — a popular starting point for the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. From Jomsom, you can either fly or drive back to Pokhara or Kathmandu. If you have less time, you can also return from Chame.

The Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake Trek is one of the best ways to experience both adventure and the natural beauty of the Himalayas. It’s a challenging trek, but the scenery, culture, and sense of achievement make it worth every step.

Trip Highlights

Journey Highlights

Tilicho Lake

Tilicho Lake itself, 4,919m, held by most sources to be among the highest lakes of its size in the world

Thorong La Pass

5,416m, crossed on this itinerary just as it is on our standard Annapurna Circuit route

The Khangsar to Tilicho Base Camp trail

A quieter, more exposed stretch most standard circuit trekkers never see

Gangapurna Lake and Ice Lake

Both reachable as optional side hikes during the Manang acclimatization day

Muktinath

One of Nepal's most significant pilgrimage sites for both Hindus and Buddhists

This itinerary is genuinely more demanding than the standard Annapurna Circuit, given the added altitude and distance of the Tilicho detour on top of the same Thorong La crossing. If the lake isn't essential to you and you'd rather keep the itinerary at its standard length, our Annapurna Circuit Trek covers the pass without this detour.

This Is the Circuit Plus the Lake, Not a Side Trip

  • The Khangsar to Tilicho detour adds real distance and remoteness before rejoining the standard Thorong La route.

Two Superlatives, One Trip

  • One of the highest lakes in the world, then the same pass every Annapurna Circuit trekker crosses.

A Genuinely Quieter Trail Section

  • Khangsar to Tilicho sees a fraction of the traffic the main circuit does, for trekkers who want real solitude.

More Demanding Than Our Standard Circuit

  • The added altitude and distance mean this trip asks more of you than the Circuit alone. Book with that in mind.
Itinerary

Tilicho Lake Trek Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Drive from Kathmandu to Chamje via Besisahar

We leave Kathmandu early, driving paved highway to Besisahar before swapping to a 4x4 jeep for the bumpy off-road stretch through the Marsyangdi River gorge. By driving the whole way, we skip the dusty lower-road walking entirely to keep families and older travelers comfortable. This gets your group safely to our quiet riverside teahouse in Chamje by late afternoon.

Max Altitude: 1,430m (4,691ft)
Duration: 8 to 9 hours
Distance: ~210 km
Meals: Lunch & Dinner
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 2 - Trek from Chamje to Dharapani

Your foot journey officially starts as we descend a steep, rocky cliff path to cross a suspension bridge over the Marsyangdi River toward Sattale. Maintain a slow, steady rhythm on the long stone staircase. Once you reach the top, the path opens into the flat valley basin of Tal village, where you can pause for a relaxing tea break right beside a towering waterfall. The trail then moves over rolling, sandy paths through the traditional village of Karte. After one last gradual push across the river, you'll arrive in Dharapani, the official junction where the Manaslu Circuit converges with our route.

Max Altitude: 1,860m (6,102ft)
Duration: 5 to 6 hours
Distance: ~11.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 3 - Trek from Dharapani to Chame

We hit the trail early as the sub-tropical landscape vanishes, climbing through the pine forests of Danaque toward the high ridge village of Timang. Here, we stop for an early lunch while enjoying views of Lamjung Himal and Mt. Manaslu’s sister peaks. The afternoon trek brings us past high granite cliffs and roaring mountain streams directly into Chame. Once in town, we skip the main tourist hubs to wander among ancient wooden trading stalls and learn about the village's rich border-town history.

Max Altitude: 2,670m (8,759ft)
Duration: 5 to 6 hours
Distance: ~15.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 4 - Trek from Chame to Upper Pisang

Our morning walk passes beneath the impressive Swarga Dwari rock face, a curved slab of stone sacred to local tradition. We continue through the apple orchards of Bhratang, stopping at a local farm to try fresh apple cider and dried fruit beside the river. In the afternoon, we take the upper trail climb up to Upper Pisang. Sleeping at this higher elevation rather than Lower Pisang gives us a slight head start on acclimatizing for the days ahead.

Max Altitude: 3,300m (10,826ft)
Duration: 5 to 6 hours
Distance: ~14.8 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 5 - Trek from Pisang to Manang Valley

Today the trail opens up into a wide valley as we follow the lower river route past Humde village and its small airstrip. We keep a steady, easy pace while taking in views of Annapurna III, Annapurna IV, and the distant peak of Tilicho straight ahead. After crossing the wooden bridges near Mungji and Braga, we make the final easy walk into Manang, a historic Tibetan-style village that serves as our high-altitude hub.

Max Altitude: 3,540m (11,614ft)
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Distance: ~14.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 6 - Acclimatization Day in Manang

We take an essential rest and acclimatization day in Manang to help our bodies adapt to the higher altitude before heading toward Tilicho Lake. Following the "climb high, sleep low" principle, we take a short morning hike up to the Gangapurna Lake viewpoint or the hillside monastery at Praken Gompa for views across the valley. The afternoon is left open to rest, explore the stone alleyways of old Manang, or attend the daily high-altitude safety talk hosted by the Himalayan Rescue Association.

Max Altitude: 3,540m (11,614ft)
Duration: 2 to 3 hours
Distance: ~4 km (optional side hikes)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 7 - Trek from Manang to Siri Kharka

We officially leave the main Annapurna Circuit trail today, branching off toward the remote Tilicho Lake valley. The path ascends along open, shrub-lined slopes before crossing a suspension bridge over the Khangsar Khola into traditional Khangsar village. From here, the terrain becomes increasingly rocky and sparse as we climb past the 4,000-meter mark, taking in views of Gungang Himal and Chulu West before arriving at Siri Kharka for the night.

Max Altitude: 4,060m (13,320ft)
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Distance: ~10.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 8 - Trek from Siri Kharka to Tilicho Base Camp

Today’s trek is relatively short in distance but requires full concentration as we cross the famous Landslide Area. The narrow, high-contour trail cuts through dramatic steep scree slopes and loose rock formations. We maintain a steady, cautious pace and keep moving through the active rockfall zones without stopping. Once across the scree section, the valley opens up into the flat basin of Tilicho Base Camp, giving us the rest of the afternoon to rest and hydrate before tomorrow’s early climb to the lake.

Max Altitude: 4,150m (13,615ft)
Duration: 3 to 4 hours
Distance: ~6.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 9 - Exploration of Tilicho Lake (4,919 m) and Return to Siri Kharka

We begin with an early dawn start from Base Camp, climbing a steep series of switchbacks up the barren alpine valley. As the morning sun hits the high peaks, the trail levels out to reveal the turquoise expanse of Tilicho Lake (4,919 m), sitting directly beneath the imposing snowfields of Tilicho Peak. After taking time to explore the lakeshore and enjoy the panorama, we trace our steps back down to Tilicho Base Camp for lunch before continuing the descent to Siri Kharka for the night.

Max Altitude: 4,060m (13,320ft)
Duration: 7 to 8 hours
Distance: ~15.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 10 - Trek from Siri Kharka to Yak Kharka

We leave Siri Kharka and take the high trail toward Upper Khangsar, passing near Tare Gumba—a historic monastery nestled beneath the stone slopes. Traversing open alpine plateaus, we enjoy sweeping views across the valley back toward Manang before descending slightly to cross the Thorong Khola stream. From here, we rejoin the primary Annapurna Circuit route near Gunsang and make a steady final climb into Yak Kharka, a peaceful high-pasture settlement surrounded by grazing yaks.

Max Altitude: 4,050m (13,287ft)
Duration: 4 to 5 hours
Distance: ~10.5 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 11 - Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi or High Camp

We set off on a short but high-altitude trek today as we approach the foot of Thorong La Pass. The trail gradually climbs through alpine tundra and crosses a suspension bridge over the Thorong Khola, followed by a narrow traverse beneath scree slopes into Thorong Phedi (4,450 m). Depending on weather conditions and how everyone feels, we may stop here for the night or push up the steep, hour-long switchbacks to High Camp (4,880 m) to give ourselves a head start for tomorrow's big pass crossing.

Max Altitude: 4,450m (14,599ft)
Duration: 3 to 4 hours (to Phedi)/4.5 to 5.5 hours (to High Camp)
Distance: ~6.5 km to Phedi (~7.5 km to High Camp)
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 12 - Trek from Thorong Phedi/High Camp to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)

We leave before dawn to beat the strong late-morning winds on the pass. The trail climbs steadily over false summits and icy scree until we reach Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)—the highest point of the trek, marked by fluttering prayer flags and panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range. After taking photos at the signpost, we begin a long, steep descent of over 1,600 meters into the arid landscapes of Lower Mustang. We arrive by late afternoon in Muktinath, a sacred pilgrimage site for both Hindus and Buddhists, where we can visit the ancient temple complex and its 108 holy water spouts.

Max Altitude: 3,760m (12,335ft)
Duration: 8 to 10 hours
Distance: ~16 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: Teahouse

Day 13 - Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara

After breakfast, we board our vehicle for a scenic overland drive down to Pokhara. Leaving the arid landscapes of Lower Mustang behind, the road traces the floor of the Kali Gandaki Gorge—the deepest gorge in the world—sandwiched between the massive massifs of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna I. We pass through the windy valleys of Kagbeni and Jomsom, dropping steadily in altitude through green foothills and waterfalls near Tatopani. By late afternoon, we arrive back in Pokhara, where you can relax by Phewa Lake and enjoy the comfort of a hotel stay.

Max Altitude: 822m (2,696ft)
Duration: 7 to 9 hours
Distance: ~170 km
Meals: BLD
Accommodation Type: 3-Star Hotel

Day 14 - Drive back to Kathmandu

After breakfast in Pokhara, we begin our overland journey back to Kathmandu along the Prithvi Highway. The route winds alongside the Marsyangdi and Trishuli rivers, passing vibrant roadside towns like Damauli, Dumre, and Mugling, offering glimpses of terraced farming and everyday rural life. Upon arriving in Kathmandu by late afternoon, you can relax at your hotel, get a massage to unwind after the trek, or stroll through Thamel to pick up souvenirs. In the evening, we gather for a special farewell dinner featuring authentic Nepali cuisine and traditional cultural dance performances to celebrate the completion of your journey.

Max Altitude: 1,400m (4,593ft)
Duration: 7 to 8 hours
Distance: ~200 km
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch
Accommodation Type: 3-Star Hotel

Doubt of finishing Annapurna Circuit but completed without any issues

First and foremost, I want to thank Mr. Shiva, my trek guide who was with me on my worst and best times in this trek. He was my source of motivation for this trek. Also, my fellow trekkers were kind enough.

Mr. Ram was a very responsive person. He did reply to my every queries. The well maintained logistics, porters, guides from Sublime Trails were fantastic. I give four or five stars to this company. I recommend this company to everyone who wishes to trek Annapurna Circuit. Best trip of my life. Wonderful.

Difficult but amazing trekking

I and my boyfriend decided to spend our holiday trekking in Nepal and it turned out amazing! We chose Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake as we wanted to explore Nepal without any rush. The trail was so beautiful, we had to cross many jungles rivers and we encountered so many beautiful waterfalls! Diving into the hotsprings was one of the best experience. People we met along the way were so friendly and kind, we had so much fun talking to them. At some points, it was so difficult to move further such as Thorong La Pass and on the way to Tilicho. But our guide kept us motivated and helped a lot! The view of the Lake and the mountain were so amazing that'd make us forget all the difficulties along the way! Nepal is amazing, we definitely coming back again to visit!

Know Everything Before You Go Tilicho Lake Trek

Weather and Temperature

Autumn and spring are the best times of the year to visit Tilicho Lake. You can tour the stunning mountain panoramas of the Manaslu and Annapurna regions during these months.

Below is the list of all four seasons in Nepal:

Autumn: The Autumn season is ideal for hiking and other adventurous sports due to the pleasant atmosphere, steady and reasonable level of weather and temperature, and clear skies. In Nepal, September, October, and November fall under this season. The weather is constant, and the temperature is mild. It is the finest time to explore the lush, green forest, the blossoming rhododendrons on the hills, and the alluring aura of nature.

This season is the welcoming period of the main festival in Nepal. Dashain and Tihar are celebrated by people of diverse cultural backgrounds, so autumn gifts you with a proper cultural exploration.

Spring: Spring is the second-best time of year to visit the trek. Similar to autumn, the weather is fairly clear, and the trail is covered with various flowers so that you can immerse yourself in the scenery and the beauty of nature. In Nepal, the spring season begins in March and lasts through May.

You can even experience the breathtaking views of the Gangapurna, Pisang Peak, Annapurna II, Annapurna III, and Annapurna IV while trekking around Tilicho Lake because the view is clear and the weather is favorable. Additionally, the trail's Gompas and monasteries, as well as the Manang Valley's distinctive trans-Himalayan terrain, are spectacular in the spring.

Summer: June marks the beginning of summer, which lasts through August. Due to the favorable weather, it is an excellent time to explore mountainous areas. However, the travel can be challenging because the Terai and lower hilly regions have temperatures that stay around and above 28 degrees Celsius.

Nepal experiences its monsoon season in the summer. It is challenging to go on a trek in the highlands because of the frequently changing weather and environment. It rains quite frequently and erratically everywhere, which makes travel difficult.

Winter: The winter months in Nepal are December, January, and February. Urban areas and those with lower elevations are best explored during the winter. There is a greater likelihood of snowfall and icy weather at higher elevations. Trekking to Tilicho Lake is thus possible in the final month of winter; however, this time of year is not the best.

Upper elevations get negative unit temperatures, making conditions extremely icy and challenging. As a result, higher-elevation hiking activities are not very favorable during this season.

Currency & ATMs

Exchange currency in Kathmandu before departure, since this itinerary starts and ends there, not in Pokhara. ATMs exist in Besisahar and Manang along the trek, though nothing on the remote Khangsar to Tilicho stretch. Carry the local currency equivalent of at least US$320 in cash for the full fourteen days.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is not legally required to enter Nepal or obtain a visa. It is required by us before you can start this trek, the same as every itinerary we run.

Your policy needs high-altitude coverage to at least 6,000m and helicopter evacuation coverage, given both Tilicho Lake at 4,919m and Thorong La Pass at 5,416m on this route. Confirm your policy covers the Khangsar to Tilicho stretch specifically. This detour is more remote than the main Annapurna Circuit trail, and some policies define coverage zones narrowly. US-based trekkers commonly use UnitedHealthcare Global. European trekkers use Allianz or Europe Assist. Australian trekkers use Cover-More.

Buy your policy before you leave home. Confirm it names the Jomsom to Pokhara flight explicitly under trip interruption coverage.

Nepal Visa

Most nationalities, including US, UK, EU, Australian, and Canadian citizens, can get a Nepal visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. You can also apply online in advance. Choose the 30 day visa option for this fourteen day itinerary. It gives genuine buffer around both Tilicho and Thorong La weather delays. Indian citizens don't need a visa at all.

Travel Etiquette

  • Always pass mani walls, chortens, and prayer wheels on your left, walking clockwise. This is a real Buddhist observance, not a suggestion, particularly in Manang's Tibetan influenced villages.
  • Ask before photographing monks, ceremonies, or people directly. A smile and a gesture toward your camera is usually enough. A shaken head means no, and that's the end of it.
  • Remove your shoes before entering a monastery prayer hall. Keep your voice low inside, especially at Muktinath.
  • Yield the trail to porters, yaks, and mule trains. Stay on the uphill side when you do, particularly on the narrow Khangsar to Tilicho stretch.
  • A donation at Muktinath or any monastery along the route is appreciated but never expected. Don't make a show of it either way.
  • On the Tilicho detour specifically, follow your guide's pace and instructions without exception. This is not the place to attempt an independent route on the exposed trail sections.
  • Tipping is customary, not mandatory, and matters more than it might seem. Guides and porters rely on it as real income. Ask your operator for a typical range rather than guessing.

Training for the Tilicho Lake Trek

This itinerary asks for two major altitude efforts, Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass. Training should reflect that combined demand. Start at least 12 weeks out.

  • Cardio, 3 to 4 times a week, building toward 90 minute sessions. Fourteen days with two significant high altitude pushes asks more than our standard Annapurna Circuit route.
  • Load-bearing hikes with a daypack at 6 to 8kg, at least once weekly in your final month. The narrow, occasionally landslide affected trail toward Tilicho demands sure footing as much as raw fitness.
  • Prior high altitude experience is genuinely useful here, more so than on our standard circuit route. This is given the added remoteness of the Tilicho detour.
  • Fitness doesn't prevent altitude sickness. Reaching two separate points above 5,000m in one itinerary demands real respect for acclimatization. The gradual approach through Manang exists specifically to manage that risk.

Porter and Weight Limitation

Each porter carries up to 20kg, shared between two trekkers, given this itinerary's fourteen day length. Keep your personal duffel to around 12 to 13kg for comfortable sharing. The narrow, occasionally unstable trail toward Tilicho makes packing light more valuable here than on the standard circuit route.

Electricity & Connectivity

Electricity and charging are available at most teahouses through Manang. This narrows further on the remote Khangsar to Tilicho stretch. A power bank is essential for this specific detour. Mobile data through NTC or Ncell works reliably through Manang, with coverage largely absent toward Tilicho Base Camp itself.

Jomsom to Pokhara Flight Delays

This itinerary uses a domestic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara on the return leg, the same as our Annapurna Circuit route. Jomsom sits in a narrow valley known for strong afternoon winds. Flights depart early morning specifically to avoid this pattern.

If your scheduled flight is delayed or cancelled, we hold you in Jomsom for the next available window. We do not force an unsafe flight.

An overland alternative exists via a longer road journey to Pokhara. This is used only when flights remain grounded for an extended period. This itinerary already includes two demanding high altitude sections. We treat weather delays here as a genuine part of trip planning, not an edge case.

Trek Difficulty

The Tilicho Lake Trek is moderately difficult. The trail includes numerous steep ascents and descents, difficult terrain, and surfaces that become ice and slippery in the winter and during wet seasons. The highest pass, Thorong La Pass, is located at 5416 m, and Tilicho Lake is located at 4919 m.

As we ascend, the oxygen layer becomes thinner, which causes altitude sickness in hikers. It takes an average of 6-7 hours of walking every day, so powerful breathing and physical exercises could be helpful during the trek. The Annapurna region is not as accessible for trekking as other areas, therefore, a strong level of endurance is required to hike up from Thorong La Pass with its challenging ups and downs.

The most difficult section of the expedition may be the trail above Shree Kharka. You might experience digestive issues, so it's better to keep digestive tablets on hand and monitor your health. Although the trek is difficult, the journey is worth it because it rewards you with amazing, picturesque mountains along the way.
